Icecloud sat diligently at the sandy edge of the water. She was waiting for a fish to swim by, making a fatal mistake. One could almost feel raw concentration emanating from the she-cat as she stared at the lake water. She couldn't see her face reflected in the water; there was no sun out for anything to reflect off of. But she could see the ripples made by the minnows frolicking in the shallows. It'll come. A big one going to eat the little one... Sure enough, it did come. Icecloud reflexively shot a paw out and scooped up the fish on the shore. It flailed and flopped around hopelessly, but she pressed it firmly down into the sand with one paw. When its twitching ceased, she knew it was dead. The medicine cat picked up the fresh-kill in her jaws and carried it over near a small pile of herbs she had gathered. She sat down on the beach, licked her lips, and began to eat the fish. It was tender and lacked the typical fishy odor due to its freshness. After a moment, Icecloud thought she heard something. She lifted her head and perked her ears, looking wildly around and completely ignoring the scale fragment clinging to her whiskers.

Mossfur padded past the shore of the lake. He was going to try his luck on fishing, since the freshkill pile was running out of prey, and going stale. I figure some fish would be nice. Ashstar will appreciate it…
Wow. Back when I was a loner, did I ever eat fish? I don't think so, but I'm not sure. I can't remember…
He paused, seeing the RiverClan medicine cat, Icecloud out of the corner of his eye a few fox-lengths away from him. His gaze shifted from a few silver fish that were swimming about to Icecloud, who was trying to fish too. He was going to hold his gaze on her for a moment, but tore his eyes away. It was too hard to look, for a reason he didn't know. Impulsively, he padded up a few tail-lengths closer, still trying to keep his gaze off the medicine cat.

Icecloud blinked, licking a few clumps of fish off of her lips, and glanced at Mossfur. It finally dawned on her that he was the one who had made the noise that had startled her while eating. Her eyes rested on the warrior before flicking back to her fish. The medicine cat took a few more bites of the fresh-kill before making a delayed double-take at the cat. She felt an impulse to talk to the cat, which she considered a normal part of her "yes, talk to me--no, go away" personality. "Hello," she meowed, voice a bit more shy and quiet than she had intended. Icecloud exhaled softly and turned around, so that she was now facing Mossfur and attempting to make eye contact with him. Why do I want to talk like this?

[OOC: Sorry for the delay!! D8]
Mossfur's ears pricked at the sound of Icecloud greeting him. From what he could tell, Icecloud was maybe a little shy. So was Mossfur, but for some reason, this time he felt like he wanted to talk. Maybe he just felt more friendly than usual…
The dark gray tom dipped his head in greeting. " Hey, Icecloud."he meowed. "What's up?"

"Nothing of importance," Icecloud mewed in return with a bit of a dry albeit friendly edge to her voice. "I was collecting herbs and I decided to grab a fish before I got back. Hopefully it won't freeze over this season. Whenever that happens, we always run short on food." The medicine cat fluffed her pelt indignantly, ruffled by both the cold and by the thought not having enough prey. "You can always count on a good supply of herbs, though. What's up with you, Mossfur? Is Ashstar working your paws to the bone?" she added playfully. She was in a surprisingly good mood today. It was very unlike Icecloud.

"As much as usual," Mossfur replied. "I didn't have to go on the dawn patrol or anything, which is a start. But Mistypool and I went hunting, so there's some more stuff in the freshkill pile – probably enough for the Clan for the next few days." After saying this, he let out a small, contented sigh. Although there was plenty to worry about in the Clans right now, he for some reason was in a good mood. He didn't know why – but Mossfur noticed he had been acting normally until he saw Icecloud. Maybe I just like seeing medicine cats…

((PROCRASTINATION. D8))
Icecloud nodded briskly. "That is a start," she agreed. "Not starving is a good deal too. I just got a fish here, as you can see." The medicine cat gestured toward the fish she had recently been eating. Most of it was gone now, and she wasn't feeling very hungry now. Her appetite had been replaced by a small, slightly happy butterfly in her stomach. Am I possibly losing my mind here? And is it my fault or Mossfur's? Are we both going insane?

Mossfur sighed, letting the awkward silence sink into their surroundings. The dark gray tom now felt a bit more animated--even a bit giddy. This was a rarity. He kept quiet for a very, very long time. Then he turned to Icecloud looking at her for a second, and spoke up. "You okay?" he asked.

Icecloud raised an eyebrow at the warrior. "I'm fine," she meowed skeptically. "Are you? Or am I wrong? I wouldn't know. I'm a medicine cat, not a psychic." She coughed twice and had to brace herself as she did so, unintentionally putting a paw in the fish. It took a second for this to register in her brain and she was quickly starting to focus on getting the fragments of fresh-kill out from between her toes.

Mossfur sighed, although regretted it. He sounded a bit aggravated. That wasn't what I meant to say. he thought. "I don't mean it like what you think. I mean it like…am I being annoying?" His sentence broke off in a bout of fake coughing, although it sounded real enough to Mossfur. Feeling a bit disjointed, he looked over the fish that were swimming around through the water, effortlessly. He was about to lash out with one forepaw to catch one, but stopped himself. Icecloud looked up in surprise. "No, not at all, dear," she meowed, being genuinely sincere. "I'm enjoying the company, to be honest. And trust me, it's not often that I enjoy company." She was starting to feel less and less like the grumpy medicine cat and more like some she-cat she didn't recognize. Am I feeling okay? Am I being annoying? She disregarded the second thought quickly, because if she was annoying Mossfur, he could go get up and leave. He had duties as a warrior but had for some reason preferred to stay and chat with her. How nice of him to do that. Nobody's ever done that for me before...

"Oh," Mossfur replied, sounding relieved. "Good. I was hoping I wasn't." Am I going insane? I don't ever act like this. he thought. Normally he was a very quiet cat, letting other cats to the talking. Normally, he would have avoided Icecloud so he could go hunting--he didn't like having medicine cats bother him to do whatever. And normally, he would have not said anything at all. Why was Icecloud making him act this way?

I don't think that I'm the only crazy one here. She felt like asking Mossfur to accompany her on a walk or something, just so they could talk a little and get to know each other a bit more. "The silence is killing me," Icecloud muttered. "We should talk, you know, just...talk. About whatever." Carrying a conversation was obviously an awkward, difficult task for the cat. Perhaps medicine cats lost some of their social skills after a lifetime of sitting alone, deliberating over what herbs to choose to treat an injury or illness. Her thinking had become overly analytical, to the point where she wouldn't be able to think straight in social situations. Gah. Gah. He must think I'm stupid now. He must think I'm crazy--which I am, so it doesn't really matter--but still. Gah.

Mossfur tightly clenched his eyes shut, trying to figure out what was going on with him. Nothing could come to mind. He swallowed nervously, trying to come up with something to talk about. Still nothing came to mind; he felt a bit brain-dead. His whiskers twitched for a moment, but stopped himself. He didn't want to look nervous, like he was a young kit. Just say something, you idiot! It doesn't have to even be true.

Although Icecloud didn't know what Mossfur was thinking, she was more or less feeling the exact same way. "I love fish," she meowed. Ugh! That sounds so stupid! How could you start a conversation with that?! "They're very tender and good for your pelt." If she wasn't so furious with herself, she would be feeling awfully sheepish right now. What is Mossfur going to think, hmm? He's probably internally rolling his eyes at me...wait. Why am I spazzing out over him? She looked up at the sky, which was a dull blueish-gray like her pelt. So boring.
