Starpaw narrowed his eyes at her joke. Not in front of Oakstar! "Fine, let's go." He grumbled as he began padding back out of the camp at a brisk and comfortable pace.
Oakstar chuckled and shook her head. "You're the perfect cat to mentor him." She mewed. "And not just because of your sister."
"Oakstar?" Another cat was calling the young leader.
"I'll catch you later Shadowstream," Oakstar said as she turned to pad over to her other clanmate. "Leader duties." She muttered, rolling her eyes jokingly.

Shadowstream couldn't help but smile when she saw Starpaw narrow his eyes. She tried contain her laughter as she watched him leave. Turning her attention back to Oakstar she looked at the leader with a hint of curiousity in her eyes. "Why am I the perfect cat?" she wondered aloud. She shrugged the thought off as she nodded and watched the leader leave. Speaking of leaving, she probably should too. The black she-cat ran after Starpaw and sighed when she caught up to him. "Anything special you would like to hunt? Mouse, squirrel, vole.." she asked.

"How about teasing mentors?" Starpaw answered jokingly. Normally he was the type to stay angry for a while and act bitter, but he didn't this time. "Well, what's around?" He asked half to himself. He breathed in the scents around him, turning his sense of smell to full blast. "I think I smell a rabbit."

Shadowstream laughed, Starpaw was actually joking around her. That had to be a good sign, right? A sign that her being his mentor was a good idea. She looked towards the sky, at least it didn't look like it was going to rain or anything, anytime soon. That would be best for Starpaw's first hunting trip. At the mentioning of a rabbit she nodded in agreement. "Nice job. Why don't you show me your best hunting crouch, and then we can go from there?"

"Okay." Starpaw mewed softly. He slide into his own personalized hunting crouch. He and Redpaw and Icepaw had learned when they were kits, out of boredom, and Starpaw had discovered that the normal crouch just didn't work for him. He had adjusted it so he could feel the vibrations better. Hopefully Shadowstream won't have a problem with that.... He could feel the rabbit's quick paced heartbeat about 2 foxlengths in front of him. He slide closer soundlessly and before the rabbit could even smell him, he pounced. Sadly the rabbit tore off just before Starpaw could get a good grip on it. Most cats would have given up at this point and found a new piece of prey, but not Starpaw. He was too stubborn for that. "Oh no you don't." He muttered. And at that, he took off, following the rabbit.
The small black apprentice only bumped into a few things and he didn't let that slow him down. Once he was less than a foxlength behind the rabbit, he lunged for it, aiming to the spot he knew the rabbit would hop to next. He landed right on top of it and bit its neck to make sure it wouldn't get away. I did it! I caught the rabbit! I bet Redpaw wouldn't have been able to catch that!

Shadowstream watched the apprentice with the new little crouch. That was different. Something you didn't see everyday, but if it worked, it would be excellent to use. She noted the creativity and would commend it on him later. The cat had determination, she had to admit. He reminded her of herself. She smiled and watched him chase after the rabbit.
When he had caught it she nodded. He would make an excellent apprentice. "Very nice catch! Your parents and siblings will be proud of you, I know I am." she purred.
"Go ahead and bury it and we will see what else we can catch."

As Starpaw buried the rabbit he felt himself glowing with pride. He quickly muffled it though because he had had moments like this before and he didn't want his hopes to be crushed when it ended. He padded up to Shadowstream and waited for her next instruction.

Shadowstream was definitely proud of Starpaw. He was doing so well, much better than she expected. With a glance to him she watched him bury the rabbit. "You look like you have been hunting for moons." she purred.
She sniffed the air for a moment and then turned back to Starpaw. "Alright, I smell several mice and a squirrel. Your challenge is to try and catch one of them, and I'll climb the tree and get the squirrel." she meowed. "I promise I won't get stuck in the tree." she added, laughing slightly.

Starpaw's mouth twitched into a small smile, but he wasn't used to smiling, so it didn't last too long. "Okay." He agreed. He sniffed the air carefully, taking in every scent. As soon as he detected the mice he listened to their heartbeats and movement vibrations to determine which one was largest. Once he had chosen his target, Starpaw slipped into his hunting crouch and stalked up the the mouse. He knew it would detect him in a moment, so he leaped, hoping to get a head start in the chase. Instead he landed right on top of his prey, pinning it down. Despite his surprise, he bit it on the neck so it wouldn't get away. "I got it." He announced softly to his mentor. Then he remembered that other cats barely ever heard him when he spoke. "I got it!" He repeated in a tone that seemed loud to him, but it was to volume level most of the other cats in the clan used to speak.

Shadowstream knew that one of her greatest strengths was her ability to climb trees with such ease and catch prey in them. Yet it was her biggest weakness, since she still had a fear of coming down. She climbed the tree with ease and spotted the squirrel searching for nuts. With a swift motion, the she-cat had the creature in her paws and gave it a bite. Shadowstream looked down and sighed before carefully climbing back down the tree. She buried the squirrel and smiled at Starpaw. "You are a great hunter. I've probably kept you from talking with your brother and sisters, so why don't we go ahead and collect our catches. If you want me to carry that mouse for you, you can take your rabbit back." she purred, excited that the apprentice was already a good hunter.

Starpaw didn't want his mentor to carry his catch for him. "I can carry them." He assured her. He retrieved his two catches and picked them up in his mouth. This will be interesting... He thought as he contemplated how to carry a rabbit and mouse. Eventually he decided to carry the mouse by its tail and the rabbit by it's body, that way he didn't have two bodies in his mouth. He started heading back to camp before Shadowstream could offer to carry something again. I can do this.

Shadowstream sat stunned. Well if he thought he could carry it, she wasn't going to say anything. She grabbed her squirrel and followed him back to camp. She chuckled at watching the apprentice's method of carrying his catch back. He really was interesting. "Remind me not to argue with you ever." she purred. "I'm guessing you want to go rub this in your brother's face, correct?"

Starpaw put down his freshkill in the pile. "Maybe." He didn't even have to move. Redpaw came padding up to them.
"Starpaw, did you catch something?" Redpaw asked. He's lucky he got to go hunting even if he didn't catch anything.
"Yeah, a mouse and that rabbit." Starpaw answered coolly as if it was nothing.
Redpaw looked at the large rabbit in the freshkill pile. "That rabbit? But how?" How on earth did he do that? And what was a rabbit doing in Thunderclan territory? Don't they usually stay in Windclan territory?
"I chased it, how else?" Starpaw answered.

Shadowstream smirked and put her squirrel with Starpaw's catch. She watched the two apprentices, chuckling at her apprentice. He really did do an excellent job.
"Starpaw is turning out to be an excellent hunter. I'd watch out for him. If he is as good at fighting as he is on his first day of hunting, we just might have to make him a warrior sooner than usual." Shadowstream just had to interrupt the two toms. It really was necessary. And what she said was the truth.

Redpaw smiled confidently. "We'll see when battle training starts." He mewed, his tone clearly competitive.
"You're on." Starpaw mewed. Redpaw nodded before padding off to talk to Icepaw.
"Hey Icepaw, did you see that rabbit on the freshkill pile?" The red apprentice asked his sister.
"Yeah, what about it?" She asked. She was a bit irritated at her brother because she had been speaking with Oceanpaw. He's always interrupting. She reminded herself.
"Starpaw caught it." Redpaw meowed. Icepaw and Oceanpaw are always together. And when they aren't, which isn't a common event, they know where the other one is. It's creepy. Even though we're all siblings, it's like those two have a special connection.
"Good for him." Oceanpaw mewed with calm excitement.
"That's awesome!" Icepaw agreed.
Featherpaw padded up to them. "What's awesome?" She asked curiously.
"Starpaw caught a huge rabbit on his first hunting trip." Icepaw explained.
"Wow!" Featherpaw mewed. She looked around, hoping to find her brother so she could congratulate him, but she didn't see him.
"He's talking to Shadowstream." Oceanpaw answered her sister's unspoken question.
